WHY WORSHIP?

It’s a simple question that most people never get around to asking. We hear much these days about why people don’t go to church. How about asking those who are here why we come.

Some may say it’s just what we do. It’s about following tradition and maintaining rituals. Is this why we come? How about those who say it’s about responsibility? Some attend church because they think it’s what they are supposed to do. Sunday mornings become a “have to” obligation.

Still, others may say they come to church because it’s crucial to have grounding for their marriage, family, and children. In the end, many operate under the mindset that church is either tradition, responsibility, or something like medicine we take for health, even if it’s not fun or something we look forward to.

Fortunately, none of these reasons are what Scripture invites us to do. Why do we come to church for worship? CS Lewis captured it beautifully in his adventure, “Chronicles of Narnia.” In this inspiring story, some youngsters discover what looks like an ordinary wardrobe in an attic. When they open the door of the wardrobe, they discover a panel that, when removed, unveils another dimension.

Once they enter that portal, they encounter a world with strange and wonderful mysteries at every turn. This is the image Scripture gives for worship. When we step into what appears to be an ordinary building, those with eyes to see are awake to the wonders God has promised to those who love Him.

We come to church because we believe it is there where we can encounter the living God. For those who believe God desires to do more than we can ask, think, dream, or imagine, church is where miracles are promised and lives are changed. At New Hope Church, this is our prayer for what church can be: a place of transformation and newness greater than we could ever comprehend.
